Karen Pellegrino -

I was born, raised and educated in New York and lived there until 1990 when I moved to Myrtle Beach. SC.

I started in the restaurant business. One day, late in 1995, I woke up thinking that I could "do something" creative. Without ever having any lessons, I began in acrylics, painting scenes on ceramic eggs. Six months later, I turned my restaurant into an Art Gallery/Cafe. I changed the name to Leonardo DaBagel and hung some of my works up among 32 other artists, using the pseudonym of Gazelle. My passion for painting soon overshadowed my love for the restaurant.

In 1996 and 1997, I entered the only two art contests (to date) and was awarded a Patron's Art award from the Waccamaw Art Craft Guild, (WACG). The Vivace 97 show was a money award. I then realized people actually accepted and liked my work.

In June of 1996, I closed the restaurant and began working extensively on large mural projects with the very talented artist, Ruth Cox, whose guidance helped to refine my skills. Prior to our collaborations, I had been what is known as a "primitive artist." Later, doing more realistic work, I began to use trompe l'oeil (Fool The Eye) techniques in many of my solo projects. I worked in some of the most prestigious communities, such as DeBordieu Colony, Pawleys Plantation, and Wacchesaw East communities. My murals are still in many finer homes, schools and professional offices in and around Myrtle Beach, SC.

In September of 2005 I had a serious accident. Due to numerous surgeries and complications it was almost ten years before I would again pick up a paintbrush.

I tried painting again late in 2014. Then, in April 2015, I was asked to do 12 paintings for the new wing at Coastal Orthopedics Associates, in Conway, SC, which is attached to the hospital. You can see what I created for them in Commissioned Works .

I was also chosen as "ARTIST of the MONTH of December 2015" by the Myrtle Beach Arts Council.

Since then I have created works for many of the areas top surgeons, doctors and other professionals.

My works are in the homes of private collectors in South Carolina, Virginia, New York, Florida and other states.
